The World Makes 1.5 Billion Tires a Year & Current Tire Recycling Industry Can’t Keep Up

More tires are thrown away each year than the recycling industry can process. That imbalance is growing, but a for-profit solution is on its way.

March 20, 2026

Every year, the global tire industry rolls out 1.5 billion new tires and discards 17 million tons of old ones, more than the tire recycling industry can handle. Unfortunately, there’s no plan for most of those waste tires.

A whopping 78% of all ocean microplastics are synthetic tire rubber working its way into our land, rivers, and food supply.

This waste is a structural failure. And like many industries, tire manufacturing has innovated relentlessly, without solving what happens at the end of a tire’s life. They’re cheap to make and costly to recycle. The result: stockpiles, illegal dumping, and landfills that keep growing.

And it compounds. Every year, millions of tons of toxic tires accumulate in landfills with nowhere to go. There’s no scalable solution in sight, and the tire recycling industry can’t keep up.

PowerLink Can Help Close the Loop the Industry Never Could

The tire industry built a one-way street: make, sell, discard. Instead, PowerLink is turning that dead end into a starting point.

Our catalytic digestion technology picks up where the industry left off. It recovers value from waste tires that would otherwise sit in landfills, leaching toxins into the ground, breeding vermin, and taking up space in landfills for decades.

What makes this possible is what’s already inside every discarded tire: recoverable steel, liquid rubber, propane, and other gases our technology converts into low-carbon diesel.

Our proprietary tire digestion process breaks down these waste tires into these four sellable commodities, capturing value at every stage. No burning. No landfilling. Not even emissions in the process, as we capture all of the gases and recycle them into energy.

Ultimately, just a closed loop that turns an industry liability into a revenue-generating asset, aiming to turn a market failure into an investment opportunity.
